Install WebSphere 7

Download the WebSphere 7 Trial version

Click on the Launch the installation wizard for Websphere Application Server – trial link to start the installation.

You will be presented with the wizards welcome screen, click “Next”

Accept the license, click “Next”

The wizard will now present you with the result of the prerequisites checks, the wizard will tell you if it thinks the host operating system needs updating or patching.

In the optional Features Installation screen, you can choose to install the sample applications, which are often referred to in the IBM Information Centre and also the WebSphere help that comes with WebSphere.

I have changed my install location to a simpler folder name; you can choose whatever you like. I chose “c:\websphere7trial\”

WE are going to install a stand alone Application Server. The management option allows for you to install the administrative agent console which allows you to federate multiple installations of Websphere base into a common administration console. I personally think this is not that great a tool, but I will let you decide. WebSphere ND is much better version for this kind of thing. If you purchase app server, then it is an option to organise groups of app. servers in to common administration. In this case we will use Application Server.

It is best to turn on application security so that you can verify the application server runs security enabled applications. Often administrators get lazy and do not set global security and then when they turn it on it breaks applications which have not been verified as working with global security.

You will then be presented with a summary screen, best to note you have enough disk space other than that click “Next”

When the installation has completed you will be given a chance to run the first step console. It is recommended so that you can ensure that your application server was installed correctly and runs.

The First Step Console

Click “Start the server”

You will now be presented with the SystemOut.log of the console.

If you see Server server1 open for e-business process id is <processed> then you have a successfully running Application Server.

Note: The problem with the trial installation is that you are not asked whether you want the windows service to be added or not, so you now have installed a windows server. We can remove the windows service by following the document on https://webspheretools.com/sites/webspheretools.nsf/docs/Using%20WASService.exe%20to%20help%20with%20configuring%20windows%20services%20for%20IBM%20WebSphere%20Application%20Server.

Log onto the administrative console:

Depending on how many other versions of WebSphere are installed on your local machine will determine what the default http port will be for the admin console. In my example I typed http://localhost:9081/ibm/console and was re-directed to https://localhost:9044/ibm/console/logon.jsp

If there are no other instances of WebSphere, the default port would have been 9080 and the SSL port would be 9043
