Installing WebSphere 7 Trial for Linux using a response file

By using the instructions below I have a new version of the trial installed without loosing my profile settings. This was not the best way and is not a manual. If you read through it will give you some tips on what I did to resolve some issues I faced at home.

Download the file: was.cd.7000.trial.base.linux.ia32.tar.gz

De-compress using gunxip

gunzip was.cd.7000.trial.base.linux.ia32.tar.gz

un tar the file

tar -xvf ./was.cd.7000.trial.base.linux.ia32.tar

you will see the following files....

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5440 Sep 1 05:24 launchpad.sh
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1113 Sep 1 05:24 launchpad.ini

Consulting the logs

/apps/was7/logs/install

Because I had left a profile from a previous trial the silent installer failed

I deleted all but the profile folder and tried again.

I then also removed the folder was7 folder

---------------------------

I ran out of disk space on my VM. the problem with free VM downloads is that the creators assign enough disk space on their files systems

tar -cvf profiles.tar ./profiles

------------------------------------------------

then I tried again ..

The installation installed a new profile, which I do not want, what I did then was copy over my pre-existing profile over the top

[root@websphere bin]# ./startServer.sh -server1
WCMD0004E: The file identified by WAS_USER_SCRIPT "/apps/was7/profiles/AppSrv01/bin/setupCmdLine.sh" does not exist. Ensure that the file identified by "WAS_USER_SCRIPT" exists.

But this doesn't work, so I had to re-install WAS using a response file that sets up the path I want and the logical profile name as the default install decided on a different naming convention for my server and profile than when I first created the profile i wish to overlay over the top.

My profile was set up for the name of the profile path being appsrv01 not AppSrv01 which is what the default config is for a new installation.

If you are interested the file WSCustomConstants.properties contains what the installer considers are the WAS props for the install It will be located in the folder:

/<was_root>7/properties

-----------------------------------------------

So I followed my uninstall document
https://webspheretools.com/sites/webspheretools.nsf/docs/Uninstalling%20WebSphere%207%20Trial

However this time I checked the uninstall profiles option in the uninstaller
---------------------------------------------

################################################################################
# Uncomment the following to create a stand alone application server profile.
################################################################################
#
## Profile Settings
-OPT PROF_profilePath=/apps/was7/profiles
-OPT PROF_profileName=appsrv01
-OPT PROF_isDefault="true"
## Node, Host, Server, and Cell Names
-OPT PROF_hostName=localhost
-OPT PROF_nodeName=node01
-OPT PROF_cellName=cell01
-OPT PROF_serverName="server1"
-OPT PROF_isDeveloperServer="true"

----------------------------------------------

Re-ran the silent install...

I then copied my pre-existing profile over the top

Once I did this I found that when I tried to run from <was_root>/bin/startServer.sh server1 i go the following error

[root@websphere bin]# ./startServer.sh
WCMD0004E: The file identified by WAS_USER_SCRIPT "/apps/was7/profiles/bin/setupCmdLine.sh" does not exist. Ensure that the file identified by "WAS_USER_SCRIPT" exists.

The reason is that the setupCmdLine.sh reads the file profileRegistry.xml and my one had:

path="/apps/was7/profiles"

I should have set my response file to have /apps/was7/profiles/appsrv01

I had assumed that WAS would append, it doesn't

I had to edit /apps/was7/properties/fsdb/appsrv01.sh

from

#!/bin/sh
WAS_USER_SCRIPT=/apps/was7/profiles/bin/setupCmdLine.sh
export WAS_USER_SCRIPT

to

#!/bin/sh
WAS_USER_SCRIPT=/apps/was7/profiles/appsrv01/bin/setupCmdLine.sh
export WAS_USER_SCRIPT

and

/apps/was7/properties/fsdb/_was_profile_default/default.sh

from

#!/bin/sh
WAS_USER_SCRIPT=/apps/was7/profiles/bin/setupCmdLine.sh
export WAS_USER_SCRIPT

to

#!/bin/sh
WAS_USER_SCRIPT=/apps/was7/profiles/appsrv01/bin/setupCmdLine.sh
export WAS_USER_SCRIPT

The sever started up fine and now.
