WebSphere 6 Cannot create profile: The profile does not exist. ConfigManager action execution failed on a fatal action

Problem:

When running the slient install for creating a profile on a WebSphere node on Solaris an error message similar to the error below is listed in the log file which is found in /<was_home>/instxx/logs/wasprofile/ which is logged to when the Profile Creator tool is used.

The Profile Creation Tool is found in the /<was_home>/bin/ProfileCreator folder.

It can be run silently with an option similar to

/<was_instance>/bin/ProfileCreator/pctSolaris.bin -options "<was_instance>/bin/ProfileCreator/responsefile.pct.NDmanagedProfile.txt" -silent

When it is run and there is an error the utility logs to a file and in this file we see an error like:

Solution:
The response file contains an invalid hostname and is pointing to an existing deployment manager in another cell. When the PCT tries to federate the newly created file it finds that the dmgr on the wrong cell reports the profile does not exits. This is because the profile has been created on this cell, but it is trying to federate into the wrong cell. Please double check the response file to ensure you have the correct hostnames for the Deployment Manager etc.

You could also use the addNode.sh command to federate if all that happened was a federation failure, but personally I would delete the profile, use wasprofile.sh to esnure it is not registered in the profile registry <was_install>/bin/properties/profileRegistry.xml by using the wasprofile.sh -listProfiles command etc and re-run the PCT with the edited response file.

addNode dmgr_host [dmgr_port] [-conntype type] [-includeapps]
[-startingport portnumber] [-portprops qualified_filename]
[-nodeagentshortname name] [-nodegroupname name] [-includebuses]
[-registerservice] [-serviceusername name] [-servicepassword password]
[-coregroupname name] [-noagent] [-statusport 1231] [-quiet] [-nowait]
[-logfile filename] [-replacelog] [-trace] [-username uid]
[-password pwd] [-localusername localuid]
[-localpassword localpwd] [-help]

A Sample Profile Registry:

This sample profileRegistry contains a profile listing of a deployment manager profile and a node profile.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<profiles>
<profile isDefault="true" name="instxx_dmgr" path="<was_instance>/profiles/instxx_cell/instxx_dmgr" template="<was_instance>/profileTemplates/dmgr"/>
<profile isDefault="false" name="instxx_node01" path="<was_instance>/profiles/instxx_cell/instxx_node01" template="<was_instance>/profileTemplates/managed"/>
</profiles>

You will notice that the Deployment Manager is the default profile. You can edit the registry, but you need to do it for all copies on a vertical or horizontal multi node deployment. i think there is a command line tool or option of wasprofile.sh to do this?

Reference:

On Google I recently found this document, which can be of help understanding profile management.
